Why Johnson was selected:
Johnson won the Leyden sectional at 285 pounds to earn his second straight trip to the state tournament.
Glenbard East junior wrestler D’Andre Johnson was one of five Rams to qualify for the state tournament from the Leyden sectional last weekend, but was the only one to win the sectional title. After pinning Addison Trail’s Bobby Carson in the final, Johnson leaped into coach Kevin Carlson’s arms in excitement. The 285-pound Johnson, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week for the second time, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita after winning the sectional title.
What made you jump into your coach’s arms after winning the sectional championship match?
I almost didn’t make it [to state] last year. Being in that match to get to the third place match and almost not winning but then winning, I jumped into his arms last year, too. It was so exciting to get this far and do something.
Everyone is usually happy just to qualify for state, but does it mean more to win the sectional?
It puts me in a better place than it did last year. With me taking fourth last year and having to face the No. 1 kid in state [Hinsdale Central’s Brian Allen], now I’m in a better spot to meet him later.
What is your goal at state?
My goal is to win and I’m going to do anything to do it. I think I got a pretty good shot.
