GLEN ELLYN – Riverside Brookfield is always a tough match up due to their size inside so when they also shoot well from 3-point range, it's probably not going to be a good night for the opponent.
The Bulldogs made 13 3-pointers in a 74-53 win at Glenbard South Friday night in Glen Ellyn. The victory locked up the Metro Suburban Conference title for RB (17-5, 10-0 MSC), its 13th straight conference title.
"This one means a lot because we only have two seniors on the team and we really struggled with Glenbard South last year," RB coach Tom McCloskey said. "All summer and all fall we had this as a focus. For these guys to come in and play like we have in the conference is really a compliment to them."
The host Raiders (12-9, 7-3 MSC) led 14-13 after the first quarter, but RB started the second on an 8-0 run and never looked back. Jack VandeMerkt scored 10 of his game-high 26 points in the second quarter to help RB to a 36-23 halftime lead.
"We knew we had a size advantage coming in," VandeMerkt said. "We were just playing really hard. They were really physical with us, but I think we did a good job of battling."
Will Kincanon scored 13 points and Kevin Fitzgerald added 12, all on threes, for the Bulldogs. Chaun Rickette led the Raiders with 12 points.
The 6-foot-7 VandeMerkt made six 3-pointers and 6-foot-6 Sam Johnson grabbed 14 rebounds. That didn't give South much of a chance.
"When they shot the ball as well as they did from the perimeter that makes us extend from the outside and leaves us battling 6-6 and 6-7 inside with 6-2 and 6-3," Raiders' coach Wade Hardtke said. "It makes it tough."
The Raiders play at St. Francis Saturday. RB returns to action next Friday when they host Ridgewood.
