VILLA PARK – Downers Grove South's boys basketball team gave itself the perfect Valentine's Day present in the form of a 71-43 win against Willowbrook.
The Mustangs couldn't miss in the first half, going 17-of-27 from the field, including 10-of-17 from 3-point range, as they built a 50-19 lead at halftime in the West Suburban Gold contest.
Willowbrook led 7-6 in the early going and had the game tied at 9-9 before the Mustangs' blitz. Paul Engo, Matt Zinnecker, Wes Dahle and Mantas Augustinavicius all hit 3-pointers in the second quarter as South shot 5-of-7 from long range. Augustinavicius sank a pair of treys.
Engo finished with a game-high 15 points despite playing only limited minutes in the second half. Dahle did not miss a shot; he finished with 11 points and was 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Zinnecker and Augustinavicius both had nine points as 11 South players found the scoring column.
Early buckets by Chris Poole (3-pointer), Ed Mickevicius (layup) and Tyler Zunkel (layup) staked the Warriors to a lead, and Kyle Rushing's two free throws tied the score at 9-9, but from there the visitors took control.
Rushing led Willowbrook with seven points and A.J. Nolen had six.
