West Chicago man faces charges in 2 Glen Ellyn robberies

A West Chicago man is facing charges in relation to a robbery and attempted robbery that recently occurred in Glen Ellyn, according to a news release from the Glen Ellyn Police Department.

Dwayne Smith, 22, of the 29W200 block of Lee Road in West Chicago, was charged with attempted aggravated robbery and aggravated robbery after police executed a search warrant at Smith's home Tuesday morning in search of evidence from the incidents, the release said. Police then arrested Smith.

On Feb. 5, Smith allegedly met with a victim at about 9:45 p.m. outside Panera Bread, 541 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn, reportedly to buy a camera lens the victim had advertised on Craigslist, according to the release.

The victim reported that Smith allegedly displayed a handgun and tried to take the lens, the release said. The victim resisted and pulled the lens away, and Smith allegedly ran from the scene.

At about 8 p.m. Feb. 6, Smith allegedly met a second victim inside Wendy's, 305 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn, the release said. At this meeting, Smith allegedly took a camera lens that also was advertised on Craigslist from the victim and ran.

The victim reportedly pursued Smith, who allegedly said he had a gun and pointed something at the victim, according to the release.

The Glen Ellyn Police Department was assisted in its investigation by officers from the DuPage County Sheriff's Office and Bensenville, Bloomingdale, Glendale Heights and West Chicago police departments, the release said.

Smith is in custody at the DuPage County Jail, according to the release.
