Meet Carol Stream's Citizens of the Year

CAROL STREAM – The results are in and the 2013 Citizen of the Year Awards were presented Saturday to volunteers who made a difference in the village last year at the Holiday Inn Hotel & Suites of Carol Stream.

Below are the must-know facts on each of this year’s winners, as well as their reflections on receiving the honor.

Citizen of the Year

Given annually to a village resident who volunteered in one or more community groups during the past year.

Nancy Bagdonas

Organization: Carol Stream Woman’s Club

Highlights: Bagdonas served as club president in 2013, during which time membership grew from 18 to 30. The group raised money to donate several hundred dollars to the Humanitarian Service Project, the Carol Stream Christmas Sharing Program and Outreach Community Center Ministries.

Quote of note: “All the hard work was worth it,” she said.

Terry Michaelsen

Organization: Carol Stream Community Emergency Response Team

Highlights: Michaelsen sits on the group’s leadership team, where he helps plan classes for community members interested in learning first response skills, as well as monthly trainings for members.

Quote of note: “It’s overwhelming,” he said.

Special Citizen of the Year

Given annually to a village resident who has volunteered five straight years in the community.

Linda Keen

Organization: Carol Stream Community Emergency Response Team

Highlights: Keen sits on group’s leadership team, works as a medical and triage trainer and assists with team classes. The organization placed second in the 2013 Prairie State Challenge for first response skills.

Quote of note: “I’m just very blessed that they even nominated me,” she said.

Steve Griffin

Organization: Carol Stream Park District

Highlights: Griffin has coached district basketball and baseball teams for the last seven years, including coaching two of each team for the last three years.

Quote of note: “It just shows that volunteers are appreciated,” he said.

Judges Recognition Award

Given annually to a person who lives outside Carol Stream, but has provided exemplary volunteer service in the village.

Ed Zuniga

Organization: Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce

Highlights: Zuniga owns Community Auto Body of Carol Stream and is chair of the chamber’s Members Promotion Committee, on which he works to encourage event attendance and facilitate a variety of networking opportunities.

Quote of note: “I’m very grateful that they thought enough of me to recommend me … I do love the area.”
