Prep roundup: Timothy's VanderBrug passes 1,000 points
The Timothy Christian boys basketball team started hot, but was unable to hang with Riverside Brookfield on Feb. 7. The Trojans led 22-13 after a quarter but lost 71-55.
Timothy made six 3-pointers in the first quarter to jump out to the big lead and got 13 points from Connor VanderBrug. VanderBrug finished with 24 points and surpassed the 1,000-point mark for his career. Timothy bounced back Tuesday with a 67-52 win at Elmwood Park.
With a 72-67 win against Montini in a Suburban Christian Gold game Friday, the Knights clinched at least a share of the SCG title. On Tuesday, Rhashaun Epting’s 31 points weren’t enough in a 74-67 overtime loss to St. Francis.
Paige Wrasse scored 15 points to lead the Dukes to a 51-20 win at Glenbard West on Saturday. The Dukes defeated Downers Grove South 57-30 Wednesday.
The Knights advanced to tonight’s regional final by defeating Walther Christian 52-26 Wednesday. They will face Westminster Christian in the final.
Kaitlyn Gehrke led the Trojans with 13 points in a 36-32 win against Fenton on Friday. The Trojans lost to St. Francis 43-36 Tuesday.
Two Dukes got through to the sectional meet by placing in the top three at the tough Glenbard East regional. Noah Fleckenstein was second at 195 pounds and Jordan Santiago was third at 160 to advance. The duo will compete at the Leyden sectional this weekend.
Pat Guinan won the Class 1A regional at 138 pounds. He will be joined by Brendan O’Brian (second at 132), Tommy Guinan (third at 152) and Max Eichhorn (second at 160) at the Plano sectional.
Meghan Davidson automatically qualified for state on balance beam from the Wheaton Warrenville South sectional. Her score of 9.375 was fourth in the event.
The Dukes were second at the Hinsdale South regional to advance to sectionals. Katelyn Thurnall had the second-best series at the regional at 1,227. Jessica Jensen, Lauren Tamm, Hannah Schwarz and Ashley Newman also competed for York.
The Dukes were 22nd in the large team group at the state competitive meet.
The Trojans were just off the cut to advance to the finals of the competitive state meet finals. Timothy was 11th and 10 teams qualified.
The Dukes were fifth at the West Suburban Silver meet.
