LYONS – More than 4,000 Lyons households and businesses will be fitted with ComEd smart meters during 2014, according to a news release from the company.
The digital electric meters use two-way radio communications to collect usage information and securely transmit it to ComEd through a wireless connection.
Last year, ComEd installed more than 70,000 smart meters and is expected to install 160,000 this year.
Smart meters provide customers with access to more information about energy use through online energy-management tools that can help customers manage electric bills, according to ComEd. Because smart meters automatically send meter readings to ComEd, they also help eliminate estimated bills and reduce operating costs that become savings on customers’ electric bills.
The meters only measure the amount of energy used, not how it is used. ComEd said it uses state-of-the-art technology to ensure customer privacy
Before installation customers will receive a letter from ComEd with details on when their installation will take place. Installation takes about 10 minutes.
