Free throw shooting lifts York boys to win over Glenbard West

GLEN ELLYN – Frank Toohey didn't score a basket in the second quarter of Friday's game at Glenbard West.

Neither did any of his York teammates.

Yet the Dukes were still able to increase the lead they built in the first quarter as they went on to win the West Suburban Silver contest 51-38.

York (22-2 overall, 9-0 WSS) led 16-11 after a quarter, but the Hilltoppers (9-11, 2-7) tied it on Corey Davis' coast-to-coast driving layup and Justin Pierce's 3-pointer with 5:51 left in the second.

The Dukes responded with an 8-0 run with all eight points coming on 8-of-10 free throw shooting. Toohey was 5-of-6 from the stripe in the frame, Brent Gasparich sank a pair and Charlie Rose hit one as York led 24-18 at intermission.

West trailed by six points on two occasions in the second half, but scored just one bucket over the final three minutes of the game. York pulled away late at the free throw line, going 11-of-12 from the stripe in the final 2:50 of the game.

Toohey led all scorers with 18 points. Stanley Roberts had eight for the Dukes while Rose and Jayvon Thomas scored seven each.

Pierce paced West with 11 points, and Will Reedy and Alex Passi scored six apiece.

West is scheduled to host Oak Park-River Forest at 7:30 p.m. Saturday while York is off until a Feb. 15 home game against Downers Grove North.
