CAROL STREAM – With its bright color scheme and many amenities, including a cardio movie theater and smoothie happy hours, Retro Fitness of Carol Stream is not a typical gym.
“We’re all about creating energy and excitement,” said franchise business consultant Michael Urti.
The 11,500-square-foot fitness center, which opened Jan. 24 at 608 E. North Ave. in the Shops of Carol Stream retail development, boasts a multitude of offerings at a low price point – $19.99 per month.
Among the gym’s features are personal trainers, group classes, tanning, childsitting, a juice bar, locker rooms, a pro shop with retail items and a one-hour fitness orientation that comes with purchasing a membership, according to Retro Fitness representatives.
One of the business’ more unusual draws is its theater, which screens a movie each day, all day, on a 220-inch projection screen. Instead of seating, the room is equipped with treadmills, stationary bikes and ellipticals.
“We try to make it fun,” Urti said.
The Carol Stream gym is the New Jersey-based franchise’s first Chicago area location. The company has 100 sites nationwide, and hopes to open another 50 in 2014, according to Urti.
Location owner Charles Cui plans to establish two additional gyms in DuPage or Will counties.
“It’s a great business concept,” he said.
The fitness center hosted a ribbon cutting with the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce on Jan. 30.
“We’re glad they’re a part of helping the community get healthy,” said chamber President Luanne Newman.
