ELMHURST – Members of the Sandburg Middle School Crochet Club donated handmade mittens to a charity in Michigan for the second year.

Last week students packed up 14 pairs of brand new mittens along with personal messages of encouragement to Mittens for Detroit. This year, club members tried a new pattern that proved to be more difficult than they anticipated, but allowed the mittens to be worn on either hand, according to club leader Nancy Bensfield.

According to the organization's website, Mittens for Detroit is a community initiative founded in 2010 by "Detroit 1-8-7" actress Erin Cummings to collect and distribute new gloves and mittens to children and adults in the city.

The club also continues to work on their extended project, "A Crocheted Coral Reef," which is on permanent display at Sandburg Middle School.
