Why Johnson was selected:
Johnson won the DuPage Valley Conference title at 285 pounds by defeating all three of his opponents via fall.
Glenbard East junior wrestler D'Andre Johnson dominated the 285-pound weight class at the DuPage Valley Conference meet on Sunday at Naperville Central. He won three matches with three pins, two coming in the first period, to improve his season record to 37-2. Johnson qualified for state as a sophomore and is hoping for more this season. Johnson, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita about his DVC tournament performance.
How big of an accomplishment was it to win the DVC title?
It's a big deal for me considering the DVC is one of the most prestigious conferences in the whole area.
Was it a goal of yours to pin all of your opponents?
It definitely is a goal because last year I set the [Glenbard East] record for pins in a season. Last year, I set the record for pins in a season with 24. Now I'm up to 27.
What postseason goals do you have?
Podium, definitely. I want to be at least top five and I will do anything it takes to get there.
What was your experience at state last year like?
Last year I was scared. It was a lot to take in. Going down this year, I don't plan on being as nervous because I've been through it.
