Glenbard high schools to celebrate health with Live Life Well Week

Students at all four Glenbard Township High School District 87 schools will be urged to take charge of their mental and physical health during the district's Live Life Well Week from Feb. 16 to 22.

The theme of this year's week is "You Are Your Choices – Live Life Well." Programs during the week seek to raise social awareness, advance interpersonal skills and develop responsible decision-making skills, according to a district news release.

Live Life Well Week will begin with the district's first-ever Glenbard Day of Service event from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at the Ackerman Sports and Fitness Center, 800 W. St. Charles Road, Glen Ellyn.

Students are invited to spend President’s Day making blankets to be donated to local hospitals as part of Project Linus.

The week also will feature a Glenbard Parent Series event at 7 p.m. Feb. 19 with former Boston Celtics basketball star Chris Herren, who will present “Unguarded – It’s Never too Late to Follow Your Dreams" at Glenbard North High School, 990 Kuhn Road, Carol Stream.

All Glenbard high schools will host Herren during assemblies Feb. 20 and 21, where he will share his story of NBA stardom, heroin addiction and eventual recovery.

On Feb. 19, the schools will host special programs that include:

• Lunch and Learn for Good Nutrition at Glenbard East
• Glenbard Health Fair at Glenbard North
• Take a Seat and Make a Friend at Glenbard South
• Every Kid Healthy Expo at Glenbard West.

The Glenbard District 87 Wellness Committee will partner with the schools' physical education and family and consumer science departments to host the Glenbard Health Cooking Challenge student competitions during the week.

Following the U.S. Department of Agriculture's MyPlate dietary guidelines, students will develop tasty and healthy dishes. Judges will choose two winning recipes, and students will prepare the recipes and serve them in their school cafeterias. The dish that receives the most votes will be featured on the school menu.

Returning to the Glenbard Parent Series, international motivational speaker Milton Creagh will present "This Is Real Life!" at 7 p.m. Feb. 20 at Glenbard South, 23W200 Butterfield Road, Glen Ellyn.

Other special Live Life Well Week events include blood drives, healthy breakfasts and an Operation Teen Safe Driving initiative.

The week's events were coordinated by the Students for Students clubs at each school, in partnership with other student organizations and several school departments.
