Nick Fuller, natural resource project coordinator for the Forest Preserve Distict of DuPage County, points out some honeysuckle Jan. 17 at Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve in Darien. Honeysuckle is one of the invasive species that crews will be removing to return the area to its natural state.

THUMBS UP: The scenery in Waterfall Glen Forest Preserve should be much improved this spring as crews work to clear invasive species of vegetation. With more room to grow, wild flowers are expected to start popping up in the coming months. It's all part of a long-term plan to restock the preserve with native plants and wildlife.

THUMBS UP: In an effort to reduce environmental damage caused by road salt, the Village of Hinsdale is using an interesting product to battle ice and snow on roadways. Beet juice is said to improve road conditions when mixed with traditional road salt, and it reduces the amount of salt needed.
