The Willowbrook girls basketball team is on the verge of clinching the West Suburban Gold title.
The Warriors defeated Proviso East 61-57 on Jan. 23. Sophomore Josie Zabran continues to make a big impact on the varsity team since being called up during the holiday tournament. She scored 17 points to lead Willowbrook. Olivia Domin (11 points) and Lauren Carroll (10 points) also scored in double figures. That win gave the Warriors a two-game lead in the Gold.
After defeating Addison Trail 71-32 on Saturday the Warriors a one win away from clinching a share of the league. Zabran again led the team with 16 points. Molly Krawczykowski scored 13 points, Carrie McCann had 11 and Domin added 10.
The Rams dropped two games over the weekend, losing to Wheaton Warrenville South 53-48 on Friday and falling to Palatine 55-46 the next day. Jaron Hall led East with 23 points against the Tigers and scored a team-high 19 against Palatine. Patrick Peterkin added 11 points against the Pirates.
The Broncos fell to Downers Grove North 51-35 on Wednesday despite a game-high 14 points from Mike Mooney. Last Friday they defeated Chicago Christian 51-42 with 14 points from Matt Brachmann and 12 each from Mike Delaplane and Mooney.
After hanging tough with West Suburban Gold leader Proviso East last Friday in a 56-45 loss, the Warriors struggled to compete against Addison Trail the next day. Willowbrook lost 77-57 to its District 88 rival despite 13 points each from Chris Poole and Carlos Meyers.
The Rams picked up a season sweep of Naperville Central by beating the Redhawks 61-43 on Saturday. Allison Hansen scored 23 points to lead East in the win. Brasia Solid added 17 points and Rachael Leifheit contributed 13.
The Blazers lost to Willowbrook 71-32 on Saturday. Kelly Delawder scored 10 points in the loss.
The Rams finished DuPage Valley Conference regular season duals with a 5-2 record after defeating Wheaton Warrenville South 42-28 last Friday. East also went 2-1 in a quad at Crete-Monee on Saturday. The Rams defeated the hosts 49-24 and Joliet Catholic 54-24, but lost to Addison Trail 45-20. East will compete in the DVC tournament Saturday at Naperville Central.
The Blazers won at Riverside Brookfield 128.10-116.50 on Saturday.
Sophomore Andrew Stevens qualified for state with a 1,227 series at the St. Patrick sectional. Stevens will compete at state today and Saturday at St. Clair Bowl in O'Fallon.
Senior Austin Kline committed to play his college ball at Brunswick College in North Carolina. Last week he played with his MaxBat 18U travel team and they won the MLK Desert Classic in Mesa, Ariz.
