ELMHURST – A group of 500 Elmhurst Memorial Hospital employees logged enough miles to circle the world nearly 13 times within a 10-month period.

As part of First Step, an employee wellness program, the group logged 320,000 miles from March 1 to Dec. 31, according to a hospital news release. The program encourages employees to stay active in whatever way they enjoy most.

Employees could walk, run, bike, do aerobics or other activities in order to earn miles. Even housework could be translated through an online tracker which converted steps logged on a pedometer into miles.

The program included 39 teams and 500 participants. The winning team, Walking Tall, logged 41,000 miles between its 20 members.

All participants were recognized at an award ceremony Jan. 15. at Elmhurst Memorial Hospital.
