BERWYN – A fire at a two-story Berwyn storefront on Cermak Road gutted a first floor bicycle shop and caused six blocks around Cermak Road and Ridgeland Avenue to lose power early Thursday morning.

Firefighters were called to Art's Cycling & Fitness, 6212 Cermak Road, at 4:30 a.m, and evacuated occupants of a second-floor apartment in the building, City Administrator Brian Pabst said. Efforts were focused on keeping adjacent buildings from catching on fire due to the fact the building was fully involved in flames.

"It definitely got going quickly," Pabst said.

The blaze eventually caused the roof to collapse, and firefighters had yet to actually enter the building.

Two firefighters suffered non-serious injuries.

Cermak Road was closed due to icy conditions and officials expected that eastbound lanes would be opening up shortly.

Power was cut affecting about a six block radius as a matter of procedure while firefighters fought the blaze. Power has been restored to a portion of that area.
