Comings and goings: Changes underway at Heritage Plaza with Ace closing, spa opening

CAROL STREAM – As one door prepares to close at Carol Stream’s Heritage Plaza, another is set to open in the retail development at the southeast corner of Army Trail and County Farm roads.

Ziegler’s Ace Hardware of Carol Stream will close in early March, shuttering its store at Heritage Plaza after 25 years. Meanwhile, Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa will open this weekend at the complex.

The Ace closing came about when Ziegler’s ownership and the property’s landlord couldn’t agree on rent for the space after the location lost money in recent years, said store owner David Ziegler.

“The 2009 recession impacted us,” he said.

Ziegler, whose family owns nine regional Ace stores, said the lack of profitability was specific to Carol Stream. He plans to establish at least one new location in the northwest suburbs with the closing of the Heritage Plaza store.

“Ziegler’s, overall, is doing quite well,” he said.

Ace Hardware of Carol Stream employs 15 people, all of whom received offers to transfer to other stores. The majority of employees accepted, Ziegler said.

“I’m pleased that we can offer jobs to our staff,” Ziegler said. “But I’m sad for the customers in that area.”

All items in the store are on sale and Ziegler said the discounts will get steeper as the closing date approaches.

“People have said ‘I’m really sad to see them leave,’” said Luanne Newman, executive director of the Carol Stream Chamber of Commerce.

However, just down the road, Mike Lieske, owner of Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa of Carol Stream, is preparing for opening day.

“We’re in a great plaza,” Lieske said. “It’s kind of the perfect clientele.”

Lieske spent 30 years working in the information technology industry and, after leaving his job as a sales executive for IBM, took the money from his retirement package and started a small business.

Hand and Stone Massage and Facial Spa of Carol Stream will be the third Chicago area storefront for the national franchise, which has about 140 total locations.

Lieske said he chose to open a spa because he wanted people to leave his business feeling happy and healthy.

“I was really excited about getting into the health and wellness industry,” he said.

Hand and Stone will offer 10 types of massage therapies, facials, peels and waxing at affordable prices.

“It’s a beautiful facility,” Newman said.

The spa will open for business Sunday.

Lieske hopes to open a second location in 2015 in Schaumburg.
