West Chicago D-33 spelling bee semi-finals to begin Tuesday

WEST CHICAGO – The West Chicago Elementary School District 33 spelling bee semi-finals will begin Tuesday.

About 78 students will participate in this year's spelling bees. The top two spellers from the district will advance to the DuPage Regional Spelling Bee at 5:30 p.m. Feb. 26 at Wheaton North High School, 701 W. Thomas Road in Wheaton.

From there, spellers may advance to the Scripps National Spelling Bee near Washington, D.C.

Judges and pronouncers for the District 33 bee include district teachers, administrators and Board of Education members, West Chicago Public Library employees, West Chicago City Council aldermen, Mayor Ruben Pineda and community members.

The spelling bee semi-finals will take place at 7 p.m. at Leman Middle School, 238 E. Hazel St. in West Chicago, on the following dates:

• Third grade: Tuesday
• Fourth grade: Thursday
• Fifth grade: Jan. 21
• Middle school: Jan. 23.

The District Final Bee will be held Jan. 30.
