Schlecht’s size a difference for Dukes
ELMHURST – Molly Schlecht plays two sports, volleyball and basketball, that put a premium on height.
In both cases, Schlecht, a 6-foot-2 senior at York, puts her height to good use.
As a center for the girls basketball team, she averages 8.8 points and 6.1 rebounds per game. She had a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds in Wednesday’s 40-21 win against Glenbard West.
“She was a monster,” York coach John Constable said. “That’s the best she’s attacked the offensive glass all season. She was absolutely dominant on the boards, and that’s what we expect out of her. That’s what we like to see.”
The Dukes improved to 10-9 and 2-5 in the West Suburban Silver with the win. The win against Glenbard West, coupled with Monday’s 55-29 victory against Downers Grove South, was a positive bounce back after losing to conference leader Downers Grove North 54-41 on Saturday.
In that game, York fell behind 22-4 after a quarter and was unable to come back despite outscoring the Trojans in the final three quarters.
“If we don’t get off to such a bad start, that changes the complexity of that game,” Constable said. “I thought what we had been doing since Christmas, even leading into that game, we had been doing a lot of things we wanted to do defensively.”
Schlecht has been a big part of that success on the defensive end. She complements York’s bevy of quick guards by providing size on the inside.
The senior center has noticed better play from the Dukes lately. York has won seven of its last eight games.
“The second half of our season, we’ve been much stronger than the first half,” Schlecht said. “I think we’re just going to get better from here.
“I think we’ve just been learning how to get better together. We’ve been slowing it down. We’re rotating the ball more, waiting for better shot selection, things like that.”
Schlecht is hoping to continue her basketball career in college and said Wisconsin-Whitewater, a Division III program that made the national title game last season, is among her top options.
