Big run leads to big win for Downers South boys hoops

DGN girls remain perfect in conference; Nugent and Hobbs win tourney titles for DGS wrestling

After falling behind Willowbrook 9-5 in the first quarter of Friday's West Suburban Gold game, Downers Grove South's boys basketball team broke the game open with a huge 40-9 run as it went on to win 56-36.

South's bug run extended from late in the first quarter to late in the third quarter and essentially put the game away. The Mustangs (4-7 overall, 3-1 WSG) led 29-17 at halftime and 47-23 at the end of the third quarter.

Danny Spinuzza scored 12 points, Paul Engo III tallied 10, and Matt Zinnecker finished with seven points, six rebounds and five assists.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Downers Grove North

Downers Grove North's girls basketball team jumped out to a 22-9 lead at the end of the first quarter during Saturday's game at York, rode that early momentum to a 54-41 West Suburban Silver win over the Dukes.

Peyton Winters helped stake the Trojans (14-2 overall, 6-0 WSS) to the early lead by scoring 12 of her game-high 20 points in the first quarter.

Jaida Green tallied nine of her 15 points in the second half. Lauren Porcelli scored eight points and Sarah Costello added seven.

North is scheduled to host Hinsdale Central at 11:30 a.m. Saturday. The Trojans are 1-1 against the Red Devils this season, having won a WSS game Dec. 14 but falling in the Wheaton North holiday tournament on Dec. 27.

WRESTLING

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs finished 10th out of 24 teams at the Sycamore invite over the weekend.

Joe Nugent won two pool matches at 132 pounds to enter the main bracket of the tournament, then won three matches by fall to take the tourney title. He had a second-period pin in the championship match.

Mike Hobbs (285) earned two pool wins via fall, won his first two main bracket bouts with first-period pins, and took the title with a 3-1 overtime win in the final.

Downers Grove North

After facing South Elgin, Naperville Central and Champaign Central over the weekend, the Trojans will host York in a West Suburban Silver dual at 6 p.m. on Friday.

BOYS SWIMMING

Downers Grove North

The Mustangs fell to Lyons Township, 124-62, in a West Suburban Silver dual meet on Jan. 10.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Bob Bonanno, John Derrig, Patrick Chapa and Hugo Martinez won with a time of 1:43.76.

Chapa won the 100 butterfly (57.43), Bonanno won the 100 backstroke (58.04) and Derrig won the 100 breaststroke (1:04.98).

GIRLS GYMNASTICS

Downers Grove South

The Mustangs tallied 134.15 points and finished fifth at the Lincoln-Way East invite on Saturday.

Downers Grove North

With a score of 128 points, the Trojans were ninth at the Naperville North invite on Saturday. Ellia Leger was third on both uneven bars (9.025) and balance beam (8.95).
