Published: Friday, Jan. 17, 2014 1:58 p.m. CDT

DuPage County Treasurer Gwen Henry has announced the opening of the application period for the Senior Citizen Real Estate Tax Deferral Program, according to a news release from the treasurer's office.

The program allows qualifying seniors age 65 and older to defer up to $5,000 of their property taxes until they sell their home, the release said. To qualify, the applicant's household income cannot exceed $55,000 and the property must be used exclusively for residential purposes. The deferral will accrue a six percent simple interest until paid.

Application forms will automatically be mailed to last year's participants, the release said.

For a copy of the application or more information on the program, visit www.dupageco.org/treasurer or call 630-407-5900.
