Prep roundup: Swade leads Naz boys against Hubbard
Nazareth’s boys basketball team cruised past Hubbard on Saturday in an 82-55 victory. Chris Swade led Nazareth with 18 points.
The Friars beat Gordon Tech 69-46 on Friday to remain undefeated in the Chicago Catholic League North.
The Chargers won a pair of games over the weekend. St. Joseph improved to 5-0 in the Catholic League North after defeating Leo 67-44 Friday. The Chargers also beat Thornton Fractional North 72-47 over the weekend.
The Panthers dropped a pair of West Suburban Silver games during the weekend. Hinsdale Central beat West 64-53 Friday, and Oak Park-River Forest left Hillside with a 54-49 win Saturday.
The Roadrunners split two games during the weekend. After beating Regina 35-20 Friday, Naz dropped an East Suburban Catholic Conference game to Joliet Catholic 65-35 Saturday.
Jade Owens made her return from injury in the Friars’ 57-48 win against Carmel in ESCC play Saturday. Owens, who had been out with an ankle injury suffered in the season opener, scored 14 points.
The Chargers bounced back from Thursday’s loss to Resurrection (55-43) by beating De La Salle 49-44 Saturday. Chanel Brown had 17 points in the win.
The Panthers remained undefeated in the West Suburban Silver with a 51-28 win at Hinsdale Central on Friday.
The Bulldogs picked up a Metro Suburban Conference win Thursday, beating Glenbard South 39-24 in a dual meet.
The Mustangs headed to Glenbard West for the Chris Chappell Wrestling Invitational and placed third out of eight teams. Donny DiNardo (120 pounds), Adrian Cardenas (170) and Jesus Ceja (195) were all runners-up in their weight classes.
Cardenas lost his first match of the season to Addison Trail’s Niko Rocha, 3-1 in the final, to drop to 20-1 on the season.
Robert Modiest highlighted the Panthers’ showing at the Leyden Invitational by finishing second at 152 pounds. West was 10th out of 13 teams.
The Lions proved again they are the favorite to repeat as state champions this winter by beating a loaded field of teams at Lake Forest on Saturday.
LT won the Robin Straus Invitational by scoring 150.45 points, more than four points ahead of last year’s state runner-up from the Prairie Ridge co-op.
Kelsy Kurfirst won the all-around with a score of 38.825, and she was also first on balance beam and floor. Katie Carling (38.025) was second in the all-around and Michelle Cozza (37.40) was fifth.
The Lions defeated Downers Grove North, 124-62, in a varsity meet on Friday.
LT won two relays and was first in six individual events: Benjamin Hewitt (500-yard freestyle), David Freund (100 freestyle and 50 freestyle), Scotty Seamus (diving), Chris Phillips (200 individual medley) and Nick Bonneville (200 freestyle).
The Bulldogs picked up a win against the Plainfield co-op, 122-54 Thursday.
