High schools sports are just getting back in the swing of things for the new year after a slow start to 2014. However, college teams didn’t slow down during the holiday season, giving area products a chance to showcase their talents in a variety of winter sports.
Fleming starting for
Ferris State basketball
Josh Fleming (Glenbard North) started each of the first 10 games for the Ferris State men’s basketball team. The sophomore forward is averaging 10.1 points per game to go along with 5.8 rebounds and nearly a block and steal per contest. As a freshman, the guard/forward totaled 4.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game in 22 outings.
Baids becomes big
for Augustana’s Vikings
Jessica Baids (West Chicago H.S.) started 10 of the first 11 games for Augustana’s women’s basketball team, averaging 8.8 points and 2.5 rebounds while shooting 80 percent from the free throw line.
Jackson joins Judson
Troy Jackson (Glenbard North) is a sophomore forward on the Judson basketball team after transferring from Benedictine University. Jackson has played in 14 games thus far for the Eagles, and is averaging 2.7 points and 2.2 rebounds per game.
Singh sees time at RMU
Harry Singh (Glenbard North) is a freshman guard on the Robert Morris men’s basketball team. Singh played 17 minutes in a recent win over Indiana University Northwest, scoring five points. He also totaled 14 points on Nov. 8 against Ohio Christian.
Tapanes a top scorer for Dominican women
Allie Tapanes (West Chicago H.S.) is tied for the team-lead in scoring at Dominican University with her 12.9 points per game average. She tops the team with 23 3-pointers and also averages 3.0 rebounds per contest.
Ramos takes tourney title for Iowa wrestling
Tony Ramos (Glenbard North) is in his senior season as a member of the Iowa wrestling team. He finished first at the Luther Open and second at the Midlands Championships in the 133-pound weight class. Ramos is 15-2 on the winter.
Krueger in action with
St. Thomas basketball
Ryan Krueger (Glenbard North) is a member of the St. Thomas men’s basketball team. The sophomore forward has appeared in two games this winter, splitting a pair of free throw attempts.
