Montini senior guard Kateri Stone is one of a trio of Montini seniors that are committed to play for Division I college teams next year. Until then, the Colgate recruit and the Broncos are again in search of a state title. They proved their worth by winning their own Christmas tournament with wins over elite teams in Marian Catholic and Rolling Meadows. Stone, the Oak Trust Credit Union Athlete of the Week, led the Broncos with 23 points in the final victory over Rolling Meadows and talked with Suburban Life sports reporter Dan Santaromita after the game.
What does it mean to win this tournament?
We weren’t expected to win this tournament. I think that really motivated us. I thought we played our hearts out and played strong. Hopefully this will carry over to the second half [of the season].
What were you thinking when you trailed Rolling Meadows by 11 in the third quarter?
We’ve been in this situation so many times. I think because we’re seniors now we’re a lot more mature. We have to keep everybody calm. We have a lot of underclassmen who are new to this.
What are you looking forward to the rest of the season?
We’re not satisfied yet. We have another half. Hopefully this will momentum will help us into the playoffs.
How much fun was this game to play in?
Did you see how many people were out here? I live for this. This is awesome.
