The Glen Ellyn Dominick's closed at noon Dec. 28. Village officials do not yet know what will replace the store.

GLEN ELLYN – With most items gone after weeks of slashed prices, the Glen Ellyn Dominick's looked desolate Dec. 27, as the store prepared to close its doors at noon the next day.

The anchor of the Baker Hill Shopping Center at 880 Roosevelt Road, Dominick's will create a void in sales tax revenue and jobs in the village with its closing, said Meredith Hannah, Glen Ellyn's economic development coordinator.

Some tax revenue could remain in town if consumers shop at other Glen Ellyn grocery options, Hannah said.

Village officials remain unsure of what will replace the Dominick's, as does the company that owns the property, Phillips Edison and Company, officials said. The lease is currently being handled by Dominick's.

"Unfortunately, we won't know until they sign on the dotted line and it becomes public," Hannah said.

In addition to providing tax revenue and jobs, Dominick's generated traffic for smaller stores in the shopping center, she said.

While some Dominick's stores in the Chicago area will be replaced by Mariano's Fresh Market, the Glen Ellyn location will not, as a Mariano's recently opened farther west along Roosevelt Road in Wheaton.

Although a replacement has yet to be announced in Glen Ellyn, the village remains optimistic that a business will fill the space.

"We're all still very hopeful," Hannah said.

The shopping center is located near several major roadways and continues to hold a strong tenant base, she said, which includes Gymboree, American Mattress and Jimmy John's.

"It's a beautiful-looking center," Hannah said.

Employees of the Glen Ellyn store were unable to comment on the closing Dec. 28. Public affairs representatives from the local Dominick's headquarters and the chain's parent company, Safeway, did not respond to requests for comment.

But with one closing comes another opening.

Grocery store The Fresh Market prepares to open in February at 285 Roosevelt Road in Glen Ellyn. The store will hold a career open house from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. Jan. 15 at the Sheraton Lisle Hotel, 3000 Warrenville Road in Lisle.

The Fresh Market is interested in filling various positions, including assistant manager, baker and meat cutter, according to the open house flier.

Attendees must apply online at www.careers.thefreshmarket.com and use keyword "182" prior to the event.
