Paul Engo III
Downers Grove South
Why Engo was selected:
Engo scored 11 of his game-high 21 points in the second half as the Mustangs took Providence St. Mel down to the wire in a 60-59 defeat.
Downers Grove South’s boys basketball team played one of its best games of the season in the opener of the Proviso West Holiday tournament, and Engo was a catalyst as the Mustangs took highly-regarded Knights down to the wire. Engo’s well-rounded game included 21 points, a team-high eight rebounds, a 5-of-6 performance at the free throw line and 4-of-8 shooting from 3-point range. Engo, the Sears Hardware and Appliance Athlete of the Week spoke with Suburban Life sports editor Jason Rossi about his big second half and where his game has developed.
What were you feeling in the second half, and the third quarter in particular when you scored eight points?
Basically coach just told me to keep my head up. He told me, ‘You know what your role is and you know what you can do.’ Just keep playing basketball, that’s all I was doing.
Have you been working more on your 3-pointers recently?
Previously seasons not really, but this summer I put a lot of work into it to try and develop my game, and that is something that came along.
Are you planning to continue at the next level after this season is over?
Yeah, I plan to. I’ve been in contact with some local coaches.
When you decide your school, what kind of player is that team going to get?
My skills are still developing, so I don’t know everything I’m capable of yet. They’ll get a harder worker, I can say that much.
