A Carol Stream man was sentenced Dec. 20 to 33 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections for sexually assaulting the 12-year-old cousin of an acquaintance, according to a news release from the DuPage County State's Attorney's Office.

Antonio Penaflor, 40, was found guilty of four counts of predatory criminal sexual assault of a child and two counts of criminal sexual abuse Oct. 31, the release said. The sentence was handed down by Judge George Bakalis.

Penaflor assaulted the victim multiple times in the fall of 2011 at her home and at an area hotel, according to the release. After becoming suspicious, his acquaintance brought the victim to the Carol Stream Police Department, where she disclosed the abuse.

Penaflor was arrested Feb. 29, 2012, after an investigation led by the Carol Stream Police Department and the DuPage County Children's Center, the release said. He has since remained in custody on a $500,000 bond.

He will be required to serve 27 years before being eligible for parole, according to the release.
