RIVERSIDE – A 2-year-old German Shepherd died Friday at Berwyn Animal Hospital after falling into the Des Plaines River while being walked by its owner.

The dog, who was not on a leash, walked onto ice at about 9:20 a.m. behind the Riverside Police Station and then fell into the water. The owner removed his dog from the water, but the dog was motionless on the river bank when Riverside police and fire personnel arrived, according to police reports.

Police transferred the dog to the animal hospital, where it later died.

“My heart goes out to the dog owner for his loss,” Police Chief Thomas Weitzel said in a news release. “I am also a dog owner and can understand the immediate response to want to enter the river and rescue your pet. I would remind residents with an emphasis toward younger children that they are to stay off of the water during the winter months. Th ice appears to be thicker than it is and any amount of weight could cause a human or animal to fall into the river.”
