5 activities for kids during winter break in Lemont

LEMONT – Christmas is coming Wednesday, but the holidays are a two-week break for most school-age children in Lemont.

That can mean a lot of time off with nothing to do. Here are some opportunities to get out of the house, while staying close to home.

1. Holiday Hoopla

Dates: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Thursday and Friday, Dec. 23 to 27 or Dec. 30 to Jan. 3

Location: Lemont Park District CORE, 16028 127th St.

Cost: $96 park district residents, $144 non-residents

Information: This camp for ages 5 to 12 includes games, crafts, sports and swimming in the indoor pool. Space is limited to 75 participants. To register, visit

2. Christmas Break Movie Matinee

Dates: 10 a.m. Dec. 27 and 1:30 p.m. Jan. 4

Location: Lemont Public Library, 50 E. Wend St.

Cost: Canned food donation

Information: It's sequel mania at the library. Dec. 27 features "Smurfs 2," while Jan. 4 features "Despicable Me 2." Attendees can bring their own snacks.

3. New Year's Eve Day Bash

Date: 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Dec. 31

Location: Lemont Park District CORE, 16028 127th St.

Cost: Free

Information: For kids unable to stay up until midnight, the park district will have a noon balloon drop to celebrate the new year. There will also be party favors, a DJ, a pizza lunch and games.

4. Kids Design Engineering Camp

Dates: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Jan. 2 and 3

Location: DuPage Children's Museum, 301 N. Washington St., Naperville

Cost: $110 members, $125 non-members

Information: Children ages 7 to 10 will learn about pneumatic power by designing and building their own balloon-powered project. Pre-registration is required by calling 630-637-8000.

5. Cool Kids Winter Play

Dates: 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Wednesdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays through February

Location: Morton Arboretum, 4100 Route 53, Lisle

Cost: Free with admission
