The winter sports season is in full swing for student-athletes at Downers Grove South, but it's not too late to reflect on a solid fall sports season for the Mustangs.

From the football team once again ascending to the top of the conference to a dominant showing in the West Suburban Gold by the girls cross country team, the fall sports teams at DGS had plenty of memorable moments, listed in no particular order.

1. Mustangs go undefeated for WSG title

The football season was a return to glory for Downers Grove South, which captured its first conference championship since 2010. Boasting a potent offense led by seniors running backs Alec Arvanitakis and Le'Devin Smith, the Mustangs ran the table in the West Suburban Gold conference, averaging 33 points in their six conference victories. Arvanitakis paced the team with 13 total touchdowns, including three in the final week of the season to help the Mustangs clinch the Gold crown and earn an automatic playoff birth.

2. South girls cross country continues dominant run

Mustang runners obliterated the competition at the West Suburban Gold meet, placing all five scoring runners in the top five and taking seven of the top nine spots en route to another conference championship. The speedy duo of senior Haley Albers and junior Amanda Thate led the way at regionals and sectionals, cracking the top 10 in both races and helping the Mustangs qualify for the state meet at Peoria. Four South runners – Thate, Albers, Meaghan Bosman and Abby Kargol – finished in the top 100 at state and the Mustangs returned home with a ninth place team finish.

3. Boys cross country qualifies for sectionals

After placing second at the West Suburban Gold conference meet, the South's boys cross country team finished fifth at a stacked Lyons Township regional race in late October, a race that featured three teams that placed in the top four at state. Senior Jacob Amiri capped an impressive high school career with an individual title at the conference meet, then earned 10th place at regionals – one of four Downers South boys placed in the top 30.

4. Doubles team qualifies for statetennis

Downers Grove South hosted this fall's girls sectional tournament, and the home crowd was treated to the emergence of the doubles team comprised of junior Tiffany Bui and sophomore Janine Urgello. The tennis tandem placed fourth at the sectional tourney and earned a bid to the state tournament, where they won a match in the consolation draw.

5. Boys soccer reaches regional finals

It was an up and down season for the boys soccer team. The Mustangs posted a 3-3-1 record at home but excelled on the road, going 6-3-1 with victories over Oswego East, Lincoln-Way East and Glenbard East. Additionally, the Mustangs posted the best record at the Hinsdale Invite in September, coming in second as a result of a tie-breaker. The Mustangs' showing in the regular season earned them a first round playoff bye, and the boys then shut out rival Downers Grove North to advance to the regional finals.
