The winter sports season is in its early stages, but it’s not too late to look back at some memorable achievements for Glenbard West student-athletes from the fall season.

Girls cross country finished as the best in the state, the football team had another deep playoff run, and girls tennis took top honors at the sectional tournament. Here’s a list of highlights from West’s fall sports season, listed in no particular order.

1. Running to the top

The girls cross country team captured the first state title in program history, winning the Class 3A event with a score of 75. The Hilltoppers, who in previous weeks won the Fenwick regional and the Lake Park sectional, had four all-state runners in Madeline Perez, Lisa Luczak, Lindsay Graham and Grace Rogers.

While Madeline Perez is no doubt the most accomplished runner to ever come through the halls of Glenbard West, she will also go down as one of the top distance runners in Illinois high school history. This fall, despite missing most of the season due to shin issues, Perez placed third in the Class 3A race in a time of 17:03 after winning a state title as a junior.

2. Hitters capture gold in Silver race

Though another banner season for the Glenbard West football team came up a little short of the Hilltoppers ultimate goal of winning a state title, there were many great things to take away from the 2013 season. After an opening week loss to Wheaton Warrenville South, the squad rattled off 11 straight victories and captured the West Suburban Silver title. Glenbard West gave up just 90 points over that stretch before losing 16-7 to Lake Zurich in a Class 7A semifinal.

3. Tennis takes sectional, sends six to state

The Hilltoppers’ girls tennis team ran away with the Downers Grove South sectional title and sent their full lineup to the state meet. Singles players Ali Bush and Caroline Maltby combined for five wins at state while the doubles team of Drew Menzel and Grace Norgaard went 3-2. The duo of Maggie Hughes and Elizabeth Ficarella also won a state match as Glenbard West finished in a tie for 13th place.

4. Consistency par for course for Hanson

Posting rounds of 78 and 77, Glenbard West junior Will Hanson finished in a tie for 27th place at the IHSA Class 3A state golf meet. Showing tremendous consistency during the postseason, Hanson shot a 76 at the York regional and backed that up with a 75 at the Naperville Central sectional to earn his trip to state.

5. Volleyball vaults to conference title

The Glenbard West girls volleyball team was ranked as one of the top teams in the state throughout the fall as the Hilltoppers racked up 34 victories against just four losses.

Included in that was a perfect run to the West Suburban Silver conference title, the Hilltoppers’ second straight league title.
