The winter sports season is in its early stages, but it’s not too late to look back at some memorable achievements for Wheaton North student-athletes from the fall season.
The football team had another deep playoff run, the boys golf team registered a huge conference win as part of a successful year, and the boys soccer team caught fire at the right time. Here’s a list of highlights from North’s fall sports season, listed in no particular order.
1. Falcon football flies to quarters
The Wheaton North football team made its second consecutive appearance in the Class 7A quarterfinals after notching playoff wins over Glenbrook North and Fenwick, the latter of which involved a frantic and fantastic second half comeback. Led by Northwestern-bound quarterback Clayton Thorson, the Falcons went 7-2 during the regular season and finished in a tie for second place in the DuPage Valley Conference.
2. Soccer finds forms in time for playoffs
Despite losing three of its final four matches to close out the regular season, the Wheaton North boys soccer team ended up playing its best when it mattered most. Competing at the Glenbard East Class 3A regional, the Falcons upset Glenbard West 2-0 in a semifinal contest and then knocked off Glenbard North 1-0 behind a goal from Jeremy Stapleton to claim the regional title.
3. Emmanuel runs to postseason success
It was quite a fall for Wheaton North cross country runner Joseph Emmanuel. The senior captured the individual title at the Falcons’ Class 3A regional race with a time of 15:14, then backed that up with the championship at the Waubonsie Valley sectional with a clocking of 15:17. Emmanuel then wrapped up the year with an all-state performance at the Class 3A state meet, placing 14th overall in 14:52.
4. Boys golf knocks off Naperville North
A great moment happened early in the golf season for Wheaton North, which ended Naperville North’s 35-match winning streak within the DuPage Valley Conference dating back to 2008. Behind a 35 from Matt Winkelmann and a 36 from Michael Suazo, the Falcons defeated the Huskies 145-150, which was just the start of the success. Wheaton North went on to capture the DuPage Valley Conference tournament championship at Bartlett Hills, and in the process won the league title for the first time since 1983.
5. Bradley caps career at state meet
Sarah Bradley wrapped up her high school diving career with an appearance at the IHSA state meet this fall. The senior was third at the Downers Grove North sectional with a score of 415.70, and she then placed 26th in the prelims at state. Junior Hannah Olsen also competed in the 100-yard backstroke at state, finishing 26th as well.
