Addison nursing student earns scholarship

ADDISON – A nursing student at Chamberlain College of Nursing in Addison received a scholarship from the National Hispanic Health Foundation (NHHF) this month.

Cielo Velandia, who expects to graduate with a bachelor's degree in nursing in 2015, was one of 10 scholarship recipients honored Dec. 5 at an awards gala at the New York Academy of Medicine in New York City.

The scholarships were awarded to students who have demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and a commitment to providing healthcare to the Hispanic community. NHHF aims to help recipients finish school and become health providers in a new era under the Affordable Care Act.

Since the scholarship program was launched in 2004, NHHF has awarded more than 150 scholarships, according to a news release.

The NHHF was established by the National Hispanic Medical Association (NHMA), a nonprofit organization that represents 45,000 Hispanic physicians across the country.
