DOWNERS GROVE – In a season already full of big wins, Saturday’s may have been the biggest for Downers Grove North’s girls basketball team.
Facing a Hinsdale Central team expected to be among the front runners in the West Suburban Silver conference race, the Trojans notched a 60-42 win over the Red Devils.
After the game, Downers Grove North head coach Stephan Bolt applaud his team’s second half-effort in what he labeled the biggest win of the young season.
“It feels really good to beat a really good conference team like Hinsdale Central,” Bolt said. “Considering the quality of opponent and that it brings us another step closer to our ultimate goal of winning conference, it’s probably the team’s biggest win of the season.”
Behind a career-high 27 points from sophomore Jaida Green and 16 points and 12 rebounds from junior Peyton Winters, the Trojans (8-1 overall, 4-0 WSS) overcame a sluggish first quarter to defeat the Red Devils and capture the team’s fourth conference victory of the season.
With the win, the Trojan girls are off to their hottest start to begin a season since 2006-07, when the team won 10 out of its first 11 games.
Hinsdale Central guard Gabrielle Rush scored 14 first half points to help the Red Devils carry a one-point lead into the locker room. But the Trojans made some key defensive adjustments, limiting Central’s leading scorer to only four points in the second half.
“She is such a great player, you know she is going to get her shots no matter what,” Bolt said of Rush. “We made it a point to contest all her shots in the second half. Lauren Porcelli and Jaida Green did a phenomenal job getting hands in her face.”
North’s defense limited Hinsdale Central to six points in the third quarter, then outscored the Red Devils 23-10 in the final frame.
Senior guard Sarah Costello turned in an all-around dominating performance for the Trojans, recording 15 rebounds, nine points, nine assists, six steals and a block. Senior Colleen Honn added six points.
After the big win, the Trojans had five days rest in preparation for their next West Suburban Silver
contest against Lyons Township.
