SAN DIEGO – Competing with the best cross country runners in the nation, Mailin Struck more than held her own.

Running in the Foot Locker Cross Country National Championships at Balboa Park on Saturday, the Riverside Brookfield junior finished 18th overall with a time of 18:04. Her time was only 20 seconds away from a top-10 time at the race that pitted the 40 best runners in the country against each other.

Struck, who won the IHSA Class 2A state title by nearly 30 seconds this fall with a time of 16:35, was the only female representative from Illinois to run in the race and one of 10 runners representing the Midwest region. She booked her ticket to the National finals with a seventh place time of 17:52 in the Nov. 30 Midwest regional championship race in Wisconsin.
