Police: Three pepper-sprayed employee, customer before fleeing armed robbery in Downers Grove
DOWNERS GROVE – Bond has been set at $1 million for three men accused of robbing a Downers Grove Radio Shack at gunpoint on Wednesday before pepper spraying an employee and customer while fleeing.
Carlos Brown, 20, of 6311 Wells St., Downers Grove, B.L. Jones, 19, of 1415 N. Latrobe, Chicago, and Brandon Jones, 19, of 2632 Forest Drive, Woodridge, have each been charged with two counts of armed robbery, a Class X Felony.
Around 10:45 a.m. Wednesday, Brandon Jones and Brown allegedly entered the Radio Shack, 75th Street and Lemont Road, and Jones pointed a gun at a store clerk, police said.
The two men allegedly took 15 cellphones and then pepper sprayed the employee and a customer before fleeing into a car driven by B.L. Jones, according to police.
Through the help of witnesses, Downers Grove police officers were able to spot the vehicle and after a chase were able to stop the vehicle on Route 59 near Ferry Road.
Once stopped, Brandon Jones and Brown fled the vehicle while B.L. Jones remained and was taken into custody, police said. After a brief foot chase, Brandon Jones and Brown were also taken into custody, according to police.
“This type of brazen criminal behavior will not be tolerated in DuPage County and will be met with the full force of the law," DuPage County State's Attorney Robert Berlin said in a news release. The next court date for Brown and B.L. Jones is scheduled for Dec. 23. Brandon Jones’ next court appearance is scheduled for Dec. 31.
Because the crime was allegedly committed with a firearm, all three men are eligible for a 15-year extended-term add on, according to the release.
