DARIEN – It took a while for Marcel Phillips, Larry Motuzis and their Hinsdale South boys basketball teammates to get going, but they got going at the right time.

Motuzis scored the majority of his points after halftime and Phillips scored seven of his nine points in the final three minutes to lift the Hornets to a 50-47 boys basketball win over West Suburban Gold rival Downers Grove South Friday night.

Phillips' acrobatic driving layup with 2:47 left forged a 42-42 tie, and he sank a pair of free throws with 2:16 to go to put the Hornets (5-3 overall, 2-0 WSG) up 44-42.

Stefan Kaplarevic's layup with 1:11 to play put Hinsdale South ahead for good, and Phillips sank 3-of-4 free throws in the the last minute to help seal the win.

Motuzis scored a game-high 16 points, including 12 in the second half, and assisted on Kaplarevic's late layup.

Downers Grove South (2-4, 1-1) led 35-27 after Javon Turner's layup with 1:50 to go in the third quarter, but the Hornets responded with a 13-2 run capped by Barret Benson's mid-range jumper. Benson finished the game with nine points, seven of which came after intermission.

Paul Engo III paced the Mustangs with 15 points while Matt Zinnecker tallied 10 and Kovas Rugienius scored eight.
