Fitz's Spare Keys to host party for New Year's, support local family

ELMHURST – This New Year's Eve, Fitz's Spare Keys will throw a party to ring in the new year and help a local family in need.

Kira Spedale, 10, was diagnosed with a brain stem tumor in May. Radiation treatments didn't work and the tumor continued to grow until Kira's parents Joe and Lisa brought her to the U.K. for two separate cutting-edge surgeries.

In September, Kira and her three sisters traveled with their parents overseas where she underwent the two surgeries. Four days after surgery, she was mobile and 21 days post-surgery she returned to her fifth grade classroom in Elmhurst. A follow-up MRI in November showed positive results; the tumor has taken on cyst-like characteristics.

Because of the nature of the surgery and because it was performed outside the U.S., medical insurance will not cover the cost of Kira's procedures.

Fitz's Spare Keys will collect donations to offset the Spedales' medical bills. For a suggested donation of $20 to Kira's family, New Year's Eve guests can enjoy the band "Trash Martini" or beats spun by a DJ downstairs. Attendees can also play billiards, bowling and bean bags before the midnight champagne toast and snack.

Those who can't stay for the party are invited for lunch or dinner. Fitz's Spare Keys will donate 10 percent of all sales between 11:30 a.m. and 8:30 p.m.
