December’s holiday season gives girls basketball teams a chance to break away from conference play as a slew of tournaments come onto the schedule. Several area teams will compete in some of the best tourneys around.

Lyons Township

Tournament: Bill Neibch Holiday Classic

Location: Wheaton North High School, 701 W. Thomas Road, Wheaton

First game: 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. St. Charles East

What to watch: The Lions have succeeded with key contributions from young players so far and earned the No. 5 seed at this competitive 16-team tournament. LT opens against St. Charles East, which has played all of its games away from home. LT will either face No. 4 West Aurora or Waubonsie Valley in its second game.

Riverside Brookfield

Tournament: RB Holiday Classic

Location: Riverside Brookfield High School, 160 Ridgewood Road, Riverside

First game: 2 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Lane Tech

What to watch: RB currently is in the middle of the Oak Lawn Holiday Tournament, but that will wrap up Dec. 21. From Dec. 12 to Dec. 28, the Bulldogs will play 12 games. The busy schedule will test the team’s depth.

As for its own holiday tournament, the Bulldogs open up against Lane Tech in a cross-pool game. RB is paired with St. Francis de Sales and Reavis in pool play.

Morton

Tournament: RB Holiday Classic

Location: Riverside Brookfield High School, 160 Ridgewood Rd., Riverside

First game: 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Nazareth

What to watch: Morton could be excused for considering Riverside Brookfield a second home court.

Since the Mustangs also played in RB’s Thanksgiving tournament, they already have played five games at RB. Now, the Mustangs return for five more. Morton opens with Nazareth and will also play Lane Tech in pool play.

Nazareth

Tournament: RB Holiday Classic

Location: Riverside Brookfield High School, 160 Ridgewood Road, Riverside

First game: 12:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Morton

What to watch: The Roadrunners are an improved team with a 7-2 record. The only two losses came at the hands of defending Class 4A champion Marian Catholic and Bishop McNamara. Nazareth already has a Thanksgiving tournament title. Scheduled games against Morton, Lane Tech and St. Francis de Sales are all winnable.

St. Joseph

Tournament: Montini Christmas Tournament

Location: Montini High School, 19W070 16th Street, Lombard

First game: 8:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Marian Catholic

What to watch: One could say the Lady Chargers got an unlucky draw by lining up against the defending Class 4A champs in the first round. However, Marian Catholic is just one of several talented teams in the field.

Proviso West

Tournament: Montini Christmas Tournament

Location: Montini High School, 19W070 16th Street, Lombard

First game: 11:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Rolling Meadows

What to watch: The Panthers are just one of many quality teams heading to Montini for this tournament. Opening against Rolling Meadows, last year’s Class 4A runner-up, is no easy task since the Mustangs have all five starters back from that team.
