The holiday season brings with it festive family gatherings, wintry weather, and high school basketball tournaments. Here’s where some of the area’s boys teams will be competing for the holidays.

Downers Grove North

Tournament: Addison Trail Pre-Holiday Tournament

Location: Addison Trail High School, 213 N. Lombard Road, Addison

Next game: Wednesday, Dec. 18

What to watch: A 65-58 loss to Proviso West on Friday dropped the Trojans to 0-2 in West Suburban Silver play and 3-5 overall. As one-time starters Myles Farley and David Edwards remain limited by offseason injuries, the team has been unable to string wins together in the first eight games.

Having reached 50 points in a game only once this season, finding consistency on offense remains the ultimate concern for Jim Thomas’ team.

The Trojans will continue play at the Addison Trail Pre-Holiday Tournament on Wednesday. Downers Grove North opened tournament play with a 58-41 defeat to Lake Park on Dec. 11. They will finish up tourney play on Saturday and then won’t be in action again until Jan. 7.

Downers Grove South

Tournament: Proviso West Holiday Tournament

Location: Proviso West High School, 4701 W. Harrison St., Hillside

First game: 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 vs. Providence St. Mel

What to watch: The Mustangs lost their first West Suburban Gold Conference game of the season on Friday to a much improved Hinsdale South team. Sitting at 1-1 and 2-4 overall heading into the week, Downers South will face South Elgin and conference foe Morton before opening play on Dec. 26 against Providence St. Mel at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament.

A loaded field awaits the Mustangs at the Proviso West Holiday Tournament, as the team will face either Benet or Foreman in the second round and could see either Fenwick or Proviso West in the latter rounds.

The Mustangs will rely heavily on senior guards Paul Engo III and Danny Spinuzza to break down defenses, create offense and find open shooters.

Westmont

Tournament: IC Catholic Prep/Westmont Christmas Tournament

Location: Westmont High School, 909 Oakwood Dr., Westmont

First game: 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 vs. St. Edward

What to watch: It’s been a rocky, jam-packed start to the season for the Sentinels, who have recorded two wins in nine games. Westmont got its first conference win of the season against Wilmington, but couldn’t sustain any momentum in losses to Manteno and Timothy Christian over the weekend.

The Sentinels will remain close to home over the holidays, as the team is co-hosting a four-day tournament along with IC Catholic Prep. As it stands, Westmont will host the first three games before going on the road to IC for the final game.

The team will open round robin play against St. Edward on Thursday, Dec. 26. The next day, the Sentinels will face Chicago’s Morgan Park Academy before finishing up pool play against Perspectives MSA on Dec. 28 and capping the tourney with a trophy game Dec. 30.
