Hinsdale Central prepping for holiday tourney tipoff

Published: Monday, Dec. 23, 2013 9:00 a.m. CDT

December’s holiday season gives girls basketball teams a chance to break away from conference play as a slew of tournaments come onto the schedule. Hinsdale Central is gearing up for the Wheaton North tourney while Hinsdale South is winding down its holiday schedule.

Hinsdale Central

Tournament: Bill Neibch Holiday Classic

Location: Wheaton North High School, 701 W. Thomas Road, Wheaton

First game: 10:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 23, vs. Elgin

What to watch: After starting the season 5-0, the Red Devils have run into a recent rough patch that included a 60-42 defeat at the hands of Downers Grove North on Saturday.

An eight-day break following the DGN game should help the Red Devils recuperate and prepare for the upcoming Bill Neibch Holiday Classic at Wheaton North. Central is the No. 6 seed in 16-team tournament, which includes familiar conference foes DGN and Lyons Township.

Willowbrook or Glenbrook South awaits in the second round, and a rematch with DGN could come in the semifinals.

If the Red Devils get on a roll in the tourney, No. 1 seed Hersey could be the opponent in the championship game, which is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Dec. 28.

Hinsdale South

Tournament: Benet/Naperville North Tournament

Location: Benet Academy, 2200 Maple Ave., Lisle

Next game: 7:30 p.m. today, vs. Kenwood

What to watch: The Hornets dropped three close games to quality opponents at the start of the Benet/Naperville North Tournament, which began Dec. 12. In spite of a double-double from Abby Lewis and 23 points from Sydney Kopp, Hinsdale South fell in overtime to OPRF on the first day of the tourney. The next day, South lost by one point to Naperville North. Kopp led they way in the team’s final game last weekend with 19 points in a 46-41 loss to Providence.

Hinsdale South will look to bounce back this weekend in the final two games of the tournament. The Hornets will play Kenwood Friday at Benet before facing the host Redwings Saturday to close tourney play. The Hornets then have a break from game action until hosting Willowbrook Jan. 4.
