Tourney tip time for Willowbrook, AT, Glenbard East

Published: Friday, Dec. 20, 2013 5:30 p.m. CST • Updated: Tuesday, July 29, 2014 9:58 p.m. CST

The holiday season brings with it festive family gatherings, wintry weather, and high school basketball tournaments. Teams like Glenbard East, Willowbrook and Addison Trail will scatter all over for their holiday tourney play.

Glenbard East

Tournament: Jack Tosh Holiday Classic

Location: York High School355 W. St. Charles Road, Elmhurst

First game: 5 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 vs. Riverside Brookfield

What to watch: Many of the young Rams have found the varsity level a tough adjustment. The youth of this Glenbard East team is both its main reason for early season struggles and the best reason for optimism the rest of this year and in the years ahead. After playing at Proviso West last year, the Rams shift to the newly-expanded 32-team Jack Tosh Holiday Classic. The list of teams may not be quite as daunting as what Proviso West brings, but there are plenty of solid teams here that will test the Rams. RB could be one of the favorites to win thanks to its combination of senior talent and height.

Addison Trail

Tournament: Centralia Holiday Tournament

Location: 2100 E. Calumet St., Centralia

First game: 12:30 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 26 vs. Alton

What to watch: The Blazers have started to put the wins together after struggling with close losses earlier this season.

AT will see plenty unfamiliar opponents at Centralia. The 16-team tournament features eight central and southern Illinois schools, four from out of state and four from the Chicago area.

The Blazers open against Alton, a team which won its first six games of the season. The quality of this tournament will test the Blazers, who currently sports a 5-5 record largely thanks to the play of seniors James Pupillo and Joe Kurucar.

Willowbrook

Tournament: Glenbard West Holiday Tournament

Location: 670 Crescent Ave., Glen Ellyn

First game: 4:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Hoffman Estates

What to watch: The Warriors made the final of this tournament a year ago and will be hoping they can rejuvenate their season there.

Willowbrook is off to a 1-7 start with the lone win coming over Lindblom. The Warriors open against Hoffman Estates, and after Christmas will close pool play against St. Francis and Northridge Prep.

Montini

Tournament: Glenbard West Holiday Tournament

Location: 670 Crescent Ave., Glen Ellyn

First game: 6:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23 vs. Leyden

What to watch: Senior forward and leading scorer Matt Brachmann leads the Broncos to a new tournament this year. The Broncos open pool play against Leyden and will also play the host Hilltoppers and Fenton.
