To the Editor:
$64 million for "streetscaping" downtown Wheaton? Are you kidding me? And to be possibly financed with another TIF. The TIF perpetrated on the citizenry of Wheaton in the late '90s and early 2000s was an unmitigated failure. Its primary result was a back door tax increase to the homeowners of Wheaton.
My message to the resume builders and seekers of monuments to themselves, from the mayor to the city council is, leave it alone. Property values are down, family incomes are down, but taxes continue to go up. It would be difficult to find a town that is taxed at a more confiscatory rate than Wheaton.
I've lived here all my life, but you can't build a drawing card. Wheaton is Wheaton. If my home value wasn't in the toilet and my taxes weren't at a level that makes possible buyers not want to buy in Wheaton, I'd leave.
As I've said before, keep up the bafoonery and before long you will be wondering what it used to be like when people actually lived here.
