Raiders 'right there' but on wrong end of results

ELMHURST – Chaun Rickette continues to find the bottom of the bucket for Glenbard South's boys basketball team.

But the Raiders' results are still mixed.

The good news is they are playing hard on a nightly basis.

The bad news is the squad lost by a 63-62 margin in overtime to Timothy Christian in the Metro Suburban Conference opener Friday, the team's fourth straight loss.

The defeat was the team's third by six points or less in the early going, with two being decided in an extra session.

"We are right there, which is good," Glenbard South coach Wade Hardtke said. "Now we just have to find a way to finish them. Overall, I've been pleased. Looking back on it, the only game where we didn't play that well was Glenbard East, and to be honest, we looked like we had played three games in three nights [at the District 87 tournament].

"But unfortunately, we've been on the wrong end of these overtime games."

Rickette led all scorers with 26 points against TC. Alex Jeske added 20 points and Tyler Scott also checked into double figures with 10 as South slipped to 1-4 overall.

"Chaun has been scoring," Hardtke said. "The only game he didn't score really well was Glenbard East and I think they held him to 11. The first couple of games he was in the 30s and then it's been mid- to upper-20s.

"And Alex has been playing really well. He is averaging right around 20 points. Both him and Chaun are carrying the load."

As far as what the Raiders can do better down the stretch, one thing Hardtke pointed to is executing on offense.

"One thing we talked about after the Timothy Christian game, we want to look to get to the rim," he said. "Some sort of penetration where, if nothing else, you are shooting free throws to give yourself a chance to score."

Next up is Glenbard South's home opener against Illiana Christian on Friday followed by a matchup with Ridgewood on Dec. 19.

"Illiana Christian is always scrappy," Hardtke said. "And Ridgewood is the same way. It will be nice to get a home game in here and hopefully that will be the secret recipe to break this losing streak we are on."
