Prep roundup: TC takes care of Glenbard South in OT
After trailing by 11 points early in the first quarter, Timothy Christian’s boys basketball team came back to beat Glenbard South 63-62 in overtime on Dec. 6. Connor VanderBrug had 18 points and Khali Valrie scored 15. Robert McGivney tallied a double-double with 13 rebounds and 11 points.
VanderBrug put on a show – 29 points, 13 rebounds – against Aurora Christian Wednesday in a 72-67 victory.
The Knights had a 2-0 weekend with road wins over Marian Central and Somonauk. The win over Marian was the conference opener. IC next plays tonight at Chicago Christian.
The Dukes beat Oak Park-River Forest 66-58 on Dec. 6 for their first win in the West Suburban Silver this season. York then lost at Downers Grove North 49-34 Monday to fall to 1-2 in the league.
Last weekend the Knights won games on back-to-back days. IC defeated Chicago Christian 53-47 on Friday with 14 points from Chiara Gaudio, 12 from Grace Vitek and 10 from Erin Maloney. On Saturday, the Knights beat Hinckley Big Rock 42-18.
St. Francis topped the Knights 44-42 on Tuesday despite 15 points from Vitek and 13 from Rory Manion.
The Trojans picked up their first conference win of the season, 57-45 against Ridgewood, on Saturday. They lost to defending league champ Riverside Brookfield 48-43 on Tuesday despite 16 points and 10 rebounds from Kaitlyn Gehrke.
After winning the first West Suburban Silver match of the year, 58-18 over Proviso West, the Dukes went 3-0 at the Plainfield Mega Duals on Saturday. York beat Wheeling 36-31, Maine East 58-16 and Willowbrook 58-5.
The Dukes opened the season with a dual meet defeat to the Wheaton co-op on Saturday. Wheaton won every event at the varsity level. Matt Gamperl, Nick Weiler and Owen Rehling won events at the junior varsity level.
After winning the Class 2A girls volleyball state title, IC Catholic senior Delaney D’Amore committed St. John’s earlier this week. D’Amore, who led the Knights in kills, aces and digs, will be a libero/defensive specialist for the Big East program.
Senior Annalia Fowler committed to continue her career at Augustana. The goalkeeper was a second team West Suburban all-conference selection as a junior and also won the Dukes’ Coach’s Award.
