Anderson: Township gets ready for snow season

Downers Grove Township Highway Department maintains more than 70 miles of road within Downers Grove Township.

Some of these areas include the following subdivisions: Golfview Hills, Hinswood, Liberty Park, Timberlake, Tri State, DG Gardens, Bruce Lake, Farmingdale, Rose Hill, Pleasantdale and Brookeridge.

Our crew is responsible for plowing and salting these roads during the winter months.  We have an ordinance with DuPage County regarding parking restrictions on all streets during the winter months when it snows one inch or more.

We would appreciate it if residents would keep all vehicles off the street whenever a snowfall is predicted so that we can use our plowing/salting equipment more efficiently.

Please remember snowplow etiquette. Make sure you give the trucks plenty of room, due to blind spots and safety. With everyone’s cooperation, we will provide the best job of snow and ice removal possible.

The township would also like to remind the homeowner that IL State Statute 5/9-130 prohibits anyone from depositing snow or ice upon the public highway. Doing this may cause an accident and the homeowner will be held responsible.

Mailbox assessment

Please check your mailbox to make sure that it is in good shape.

In most cases mailboxes are knocked down by wet snow thrown off the edge of the snowplow. Rotten wood makes your mailbox much more susceptible to damage from wet snow.

If your mailbox does get knocked down the township will assess it on an individual basis and determine if the damage was due to rotten wood or a strike from a snowplow.  Mailboxes, which are struck by one of our snowplows, will be repaired/replaced with a 4x4 post and a standard mailbox by the highway department.

The ones that are knocked down because of rotten wood are up to the homeowner to replace.

Christmas tree pick-up

Downers Grove Township Highway Department will pick up Christmas trees in the unincorporated areas the first two weeks of the year.

Trees should be stripped of lights, ornaments and tree stands and placed near the curb or ditch line for pick-up.

For more information go to or call the highway department office at 630-719-6625.

Lawrence "Andy" Anderson is the Highway Commissioner for Downers Grove Township.
