DuPage Stormwater Management asks residents to reduce use of road salt this winter

Published: Sunday, Dec. 8, 2013 11:10 a.m. CDT

As the weather get cold and icy, DuPage County Stormwater Management is encouraging residents to reduce their use of road salt this winter, according to a county news release.

Road salts are often carried into storm drains and streams via stormwater runoff, the release said, causing high chloride concentrations that can be harmful to aquatic life and effect freshwater resources.

The release suggests removing snow prior to applying a deicer, applying it in limited amounts and properly storing deicer products for reuse.
