DOWNERS GROVE – Several groups at Downers Grove South High School are collecting items for the less fortunate this holiday season.
The Special Services group is supporting the Hesed House in Aurora. It will collect items and donations to help purchase gift cards to help meet the needs of the homeless individuals and families that the Hesed House serves. Items will be collected by the Fine Arts Department before the Holiday Concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 12.
Students can also bring monetary donations to the student activities room, C149.
The African American Male Leadership Club, DECA, and Steppers have also joined together to collect needed supplies for the residents of Washington, Ill. who were devastated by the tornado last month.
They've called their effort "Project Panther," after the high school mascot of the town.
Supplies will be collected at school at the visitor's entrance through the end of the day Friday and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday. Those wanting to help further will travel to Washington, Ill. on Sunday to unload and volunteer.
For details on what's most needed, see the flyer and "like" their Facebook page "Project Panther - Tornado Relief."
In another charity effort this season, the school is hosting a holiday toy drive before the basketball game at 7 p.m. Dec. 20. Fans who bring a toy donation will receive free entry to the game.
