HINSDALE – Opening night jitters apparently haven’t affected Hinsdale Central’s boys basketball team.

After dropping the first game of the season to crosstown rival Hinsdale South, the Red Devils reeled off three victories in a row during the Hinsdale Central Tournament last week.

Although none of the wins came in convincing fashion, head coach Nick Latorre sees each game and practice as a step in the right direction.

“I think the first week went pretty well,” Latorre said. “Defensively, we need a little work, but our offense looked good and was able to win a few games for us.”

The Red Devils posted two very different victories over Sandburg and highly touted De La Salle. While Sandburg’s zone defense tried to trap and slow the game speed, De La Salle’s uptempo offense provided a back-and-forth affair.

Hinsdale Central prevailed on both occasions, beating Sandburg 47-37 on Tuesday and defeating De La Salle 73-66 on Friday.

Over the weekend, forward Matt Rafferty exploded for 34 points to lead the Red Devils to a 63-52 win over Glenbard East in their first road contest.

Through four games, Latorre has been impressed with the team’s discipline and inside-out play.

“We have a done a really good job of getting the ball inside and limiting turnovers,” Latorre said. “We just need to work on limiting penetration and our transition defense.”

Hinsdale Central will host Downers Grove North at 7:30 p.m. Friday.

Hinsdale South

Hinsdale South opened the boys basketball season with victories over Hinsdale Central, Sandburg and Glenbard North as it won the Hinsdale Central Tournament.

In the team’s first game of the season Nov. 25, the Hornets defeated Hinsdale Central in thrilling fashion, winning 65-63 in double overtime.

After a narrow defeat to Chicago De La Salle, Hinsdale South recorded a convincing 56-40 win over Sandburg, then defeated Glenbard North 61-44.
