This is a wonderful time of year: A time to appreciate our family and friends, to be thankful for the blessings that have come our way and to look back at the year gone by. Here at the Berwyn Development Corporation, we have been busy all year bringing new businesses to Berwyn, providing educational and growth opportunities for existing companies and continuing to support the future economic growth and vitality of Berwyn. But there have also been the events, including the Route 66 Car Show, Oktoberfest and coming up this weekend, Deck the Depot.

Come to Berwyn’s Depot District this Saturday between 5 and 9 p.m. for a brisk holiday walk through Berwyn’s downtown Winter Wonderland, complete with lights, live reindeer and a petting zoo on Grove Ave in front of the Municipal Parking Facility. Handmade ornaments created by Berwyn elementary school students will make your evening festive and bright! Carolers will delight your spirit. And for those who like to snuggle, you can take a ride on a horse drawn sleigh or hay wagon. And best of all, it’s free.

You can start at the Berwyn train station for the Opening Ceremony at 5:15 p.m. before going to Bounce Sports to pick up your Depot Passport. While you’re there, let Santa know what’s on your wish list and get a complimentary photo with the big man in red.

A hit of the evening will be the Passport Drawing, a raffle worth over $200. Just have your Depot Passport punched at each of the Open House merchants and spend $10 in the Depot District. A note: You must be 21 or over to win this special drawing.

Open House merchants will be offering complimentary treats, good cheer and holiday specials, so don’t forget that holiday shopping list! A special heated trolley will make stops at all of the open houses.

Those with a charitable heart can donate new, unwrapped toys for the Berwyn Holiday Cheer Program and canned goods or nonperishable food items for Berwyn food pantries. Collection boxes will be available in participating businesses.

You’ll find open houses at: Atara Mart, BMO Harris Bank, Bounce Sports, Cabin Fever, Classic Touch Hair Designers, Connie’s Restaurant, CORE Learning Center, Exquisite Revisit, Fly Right Gifts, George’s Tavern, Giovanni’s Ribs, Horrorbles, Kim’s Kreations, Off The Traxx, Olive or Twist Martini Bar, Peggy Rose Dance, Perception Lounge, Pillars, Reel Art Collectibles, Rissi’s Old Time Candy, Serendipity Antiques, The James Joyce Pub, The Math Spot, The Urban Mutt, and Tonini’s Market.

And to all a good night.

Jon Fey is the board president of the Berwyn Development Corporation
